DescriptionJohn George Kelly, son of Dr. Alexander Charles Kelly, was born at his father's Trinity vineyard property in Morphett Vale in 1859. Dr Kelly is renowned as a pioneer of viticulture in Australia. G Kelly began his career as a wine manager for Thomas Hardy and sons. He planted his first vines in 1896 at Tatachilla, and by 1903 had constructed a galvanised iron winery, conducting a business selling grapes to other winemakers. In 1907 he was appointed manager of Chateau Tanunda, and subsequently sold the Tatachilla winery in 1911 to Stephen Smith and Sons of London, who erected impressive new winery buildings in 1913. Wine was produced at the site until 1964 when it was sold to the Lutheran Church.
